It was a while ago I saw a good
horror movie so I thought it was time for one now. 1408 is based
on a short story by Stephen King and is about Mike Enslin, an
author that writes books about haunted inns and hotels.
He doesn't believe in ghosts or
God and thinks that there is nothing that can scare him. When
going through the normal mail pile of invitations from
supposedly haunted inns, he finds one postcard of the Dolphin
Hotel in New York that has just one line that says "Do not enter
room 1408". When checking out the hotel in newspaper records he
finds that there has been a lot of deaths connected to this
hotel and room 1408. But the hotel manager doesn't let him have
the room - it is unavailable. After some discussion were the
words discrimination, lawyers and sue gets used, he can book the
room. When he gets there the manager still won't let him have
the room. Mike has all this time thought that the managers
refusal to give him the room is all part of an act put together
to get high mystery points for the hotel in his next book.
The manager is very persistent and even shows Mike a scrap book
with horrible pictures from the deaths of people that has been
in the room.
Well, of course, he gets the
room. Let the night mare begin... And it sure does.
It's not so much a horror movie
that scares with graphical effects, it's more on the
psychological level. Sure, there are some scary scenes but it's
more the whole scenery, lightning and sound that affects you.
The story is also quite
interesting as a whole. It is a fresh breeze in the otherwise so
predictable horror movie genre.
I give this a 7+ out of 10.
Definitely worth seeing.
