2007-09-21 The Astronaut Farmer

A movie about a man and his dream. The man is a farmer and his dream is to become an astronaut and fly out into space. His dream is so strong that he actually builds a rocket in his barn. Everything is going well except for two things: 1. He is running out of money and already in debt way over his neck. 2. He can't get the amount of rocket fuel he needs because it is illegal for civilians to handle that much of the dangerous substance. Even trying makes him a suspect under constant supervision by the FBI.

His whole family also becomes involved in his dream and his children is taken out of school to help him. His son is actually also the one in charge of the ground control.

This is something like the American dream, I guess. If you want it bad enough you can get it if you work hard enough for it. But - I must be a little bit too much of a realist to believe in it. It is just too much. Not only does he do it once and fails and almost kills himself and a lot of other people, no he does it again. This time he succeeds though.

I felt like the movie was a little too long than it had to, there was a lot of sidetracks that just didn't get anywhere. I saw this movie with my two sons, aged 10 and 12, and they liked it more than me. It was quite fun to hear them discuss what you could do and what you couldn't.

It was also fun to see Bruce Willis in side role for once.

I give this a 6 out of 10.
