This is a drama abut the East
German secret police and some of their 'observation objects' a
couple of years before the fall of the Berlin wall. The main
characters are the suspected writer Georg Dreyman and the Secret
Police officer, Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler, in charge of bugging his
flat in order to find something incriminating, west
friendly or government hostile.
The
ever so correct Stasi officer Wiesler is getting more and more
entangled in the lives of Georg Dreyman and his girlfriend, the
actress Christa-Maria Sieland, as the bugging sessions progress.
This is going so far that he is risking his career by
withholding some incriminating evidence from his reports.
This
movie has been given a very high rating and won an Oscar for
Best Foreign Language Film of the Year and a lot of other
awards. Despite this, it is not quite as good as I thought it
would be. Perhaps my expectations were set to high. Still it is
a very good movie, with good actors and well worth seeing, just
not quite my thing. I give this movie a rating of 6+ out of 10.
