This is a Sci Fi movie about a
group of people, some 50 years from now, sent on a mission to
reignite our dying sun in order to save the earth, including all
mankind, from extinction.
This is a psychologically movie
that raises questions about what would happen to some people
that are put in a situation where the whole mankind is depending
on them to complete and succeed a mission at all cost, even the
cost of their own or others life. Could you always put the
mission before anything else, no matter what? Could you give
your own life or take someone else's? At the same time it also
wants to be a spectacular Sci Fi movie with lots of effects,
cool stuff from the future and some action with a bit of mystery
and thriller suspense. There are also some religious aspects,
where God is a part of it all.
In my opinion it doesn't quite
succeed in any of these roles. On the psychological plane it
feels like there are a lot of things that aren't quite explained
(like why can't they build another ship again?) but just stated
as a fact that feels a bit off. On the action/thriller plane it
is always hard to get it good within the limited space of the
ship that also has a relatively small crew. The whole thing
about meeting God also leaves a lot to the audiences
imagination.
Now, it may seem that I totally
dislike this move but I don't. Even if it doesn't make it all
the way it isn't all that bad. I liked it as a movie (but I
still would like to have some more explanations) and I would
probably have loved it as a book. I also found a lot of
similarities between this movie and the classic 2001: A space
odyssey. I give it a strong 7.
