Here are some of my favorite movies in different genres. All movies are really a mix of several genres, though, so sometimes it can be difficult to file a movie in a single genre so you may not agree with me regarding this. Since I am a sucker for SciFi I will start with that.

SciFi

The Alien series. This should really also go under the horror genre. I will never forget when I saw the first movie in the theatre in 1979. It was so much more than I ever could expect. There was a lot of secrecy about this movie and not much was told beforehand, which I think was great because not knowing what to come next made it even more exciting. Then there came the sequel Aliens, which was a totally different type of movie and now you really could get a good look at the monsters. The third, Alien 3, was again quite different and by most rated as the worst of these films. I can't say that I disagree but it is not as bad as many would say. The fourth movie, Alien: Resurrection, also was different from the rest and with a new touch - cloning with bad DNA. Some also count Alien vs. Predator as the fifth movie. As much as I also love the predator character it should really stay separate from the Alien series. Here the Aliens (as if the Predator isn't also aliens) are depicted as some kind of stupid hunting prey, just for the entertainment of the predators. We, the real Alien fan, know that they wouldn't let that happen. Hopefully this hasn't destroyed it for the real Alien 5, where the plot could be set to Earth. Nothing seems to be final as of yet, but if there is money to be made, there probably is going to be another movie.

Another SciFi favorite is The Island. What I really like about this one is that has two distinctively different parts. In the first part we don't get to know much more than the characters in the film and in the second part it is all revealed and here the action comes in.

Serenity is yet another SciFi favorite. This is based on the Firefly SciFi series.

Horror

The ring - This is a really good horror movie, much because it doesn't explicitly show what is going on. Only short glances which leaves most of it to your own imagination. As the story is revealed, the thrill and horror mood is still there even though we now know what is happening.

Fantasy

Final fantasy - The spirit within. This is an absolutely great computer animated movie which very well could also be filed under the SciFi genre. It's absolutely fantastic how they manage to get it to look so real - and this was as long ago as 2001. Imagine what will happen in the future. The character voices are not computer made (as always with computer animated movies?!) but are done by real actors who also greatly contribute to this movie. If you haven't seen it yet - rent it and be dazzled by it.

Drama

Donnie Darko. A great drama which also has a bit of thriller and SciFi in it which is probably why I like it so much.

Action/thriller

The best action move to date is undoubtedly Terminator. It has great special effects, a good story and lots of action.

Another great action movie is Mission Impossible III. I liked this a lot.
