This page will contain updates and information on the skatepark project in Svedala which is located in the south of Sweden. Here will be plans, in one or other format, available for download, of the various ramps and boxes when they become ready.

New text is added to the end of this page in order to make it easily readable in chronological order as opposed to the blog way where text is added to the top.

2007-07-24 Articles in the local papers

The skatepark has been given some attention in the local papers. A couple of weeks ago Skånska Dagbladet (a local paper) was here and made a report and now we are in Sydsvenskan (another local paper). The article can be read on their web page here (only in swedish though but there is a nice picture). Unfortunately they didn't get my name right so I suspect I will be called Rubert instead of Ruben for quite a while ahead.

2007-07-25 The railing on the box

The railing on the box is taking form. At first it felt a bit wobbly so we had to strengthen it with some diagonal boards. Here are some pictures of the naked frame

Here is a typical picture of the ongoing building.

Today we also managed to put the inner surface layer on the railing so now the box is finally starting to look like something.

2007-08-01 Conclusion of stage 1

Even though the box isn't quite finished yet it feels like it is time for a conclusion of the skatepark this far.

First and foremost - Everything takes longer time than you plan for. It is always something that fusses, doesn't fit, is missing or just simply gets wrong. On top of that a lot of build days have rained away this summer.

A pretty large amount of time has been spent by packing and unpacking the car with all the tools that is needed. Not that it takes a very long time but enough to discourage you if you only got a couple of hours to spare. It has been the mobile generator that has been most troublesome since it is so heavy. A power outlet on the buildsite would have made things a whole lot simpler. Alternatively, a shed or a container where the tools could have been locked away in on the site so we  wouldn't have to spend time on transportation back and forth, would also have helped. Anyway, this is time that one don't count on in the beginning.

It also wouldn't hurt if a little more parents and adults could help. Part of this is my own fault since I haven't been able to plan exactly when I could be at the buildsite. I would here also like to take the opportunity to thank all of you that has assisted. Both with the work, tools and transportation.

So what happens next? Well, first and foremost, the box will be completed. Then I can establish the fact that the rest of the park won't be done according to the original plan. It is then mostly the ramps in the bend I am thinking about. With experience from what we have done so far, I can pretty certain say that it will be both too hard and take too much time. In any case, there is money left to build some straight quarter pipe ramps. It has also been suggested that the miniramp could be extended with some more sections to make it wider. Another bank, a little higher than the one attached to the miniramp could also be built on the other side of the box. This way one can easily get the speed up also from this direction. Then there is a whole lot of different moveable little banks and ramps that can be built. It doesn't have to be so large and peculiar to make it fun to ride on.

In order to make it at all possible to continue to build more, it is an absolute must that more adults can help. One possibility is that we decide a weekend, a couple of weeks from now, hope for dry weather and make a go for it. You can sign up here. We then also will be needing some more tools - circular power saws, hand drilling machines, power screwdrivers, extension cords, hammers etc. You skating kids that read this can also tell your parents to come and help.

If there is anyone that, contrary to expectation, has a tool container that is empty for a couple of weeks and can let us use it, it would really help a lot.

Now it may sound like I'm only whining but despite all the raining and some setbacks, I actually have had a pretty good time during these last couple of weeks when we have been building. And above all I have seen that skateboard riding here in little Svedala is pretty big and that there are quite a few good skaters here.

2007-11-29 3D models of the ramps

I have made some models of the ramps that can be downloaded and used in Google Sketchup. Check it out here.
