2007-05-08 Skatepark in Svedala.

It is now decided that there will be a skatepark here in Svedala. The park will be situated near the railway station by Ågatan.

Here is an area, about 7m*30m, paved with asphalt and an even bigger unpaved area next to it.

The financing is ready and there is 100.000 SEK (Swedish crowns) available for construction material. The project will be run by voluntary adults and youths together. We will start to build on the asphalt paved area and if this goes well there might be a possibility to extend the park to the unpaved area next to it in the future.

The thing now is to decide how the park is going to be built and to make drawings and plans for it, everything based on how much money there is available. I have made an initial proposal that can be used as grounds for discussions. The proposal is available as a PDF file here.

One thing can be said for sure, though - With 100.000 SEK available, there is every possibility that we could make something good out of it. Let us therefore take this opportunity and really make the best of it.

2007-05-10 Ramp design

The framework for the ramps can be built like this:

The basic construction material is impregnated solid wood boards, about 45mm*90mm and some sort of laminated sheet material, marine plywood for example, about 15mm thick. Frame pieces are made with boards and sheets which are then put together with boards sideways and in the ramp curve.

The boards are cut up and laid out according to this:

They are glued and screwed together with shaped pieces of the sheet material. One of this piece is the ramp curve. This way the frame section becomes very firm and stable.

A number of these frame pieces is then put together with boards sideways.

Two of the above frame pieces are required for about every meter of the entire width of the ramp which becomes a ramp subsection. The sideways boards in the ramp curve is only put between the curved sheets while the boards on the top and the bottom can stretch the entire width of the ramp (if the boards are long enough) to keep the ramp sections together. The ramp sections are also screwed together in the sheet materials that are adjacent to each other.

The purple ring on the top is the pipe used for the coping (grind bar).

Possibly, some of the frame pieces inside the ramp can be spared if only one frame piece is used instead of two inside the ramp. In this case the sideways boards between the curves has to be screwed on both sides of the same curve sheet inside the ramp which means that the boards have to be placed interleaved.

This method could also be used on the U-ramps if the curve is put higher up in the sheet material and the board in the bottom is extended in front of the ramp and connected with the opposite ramp.

Now you might ask why the frames pieces just can't be sawed out of the sheet material directly. That could be done but firstly the sheet material is very expensive and secondly the standard dimensions for the sheet material isn't large enough for some of the sections which means that you still need to put the sheet pieces together with boards. If you have the boards from the beginning you also have a natural place to screw the sideways boards that keeps the frames together. Otherwise there had to be put boards in the sheets just for this anyway. Besides, this way the design will be very strong and firm.

2007-05-12 Check out the skatepark proposal in 3D.

Here you can watch a small animated 3D movie of the skatepark proposal. Thank you Robin for this contribution.

Added 2007-05-16; There is a new, even better movie here.

2007-05-15 Alternative method to mount the coping on the ramps

Instead of welding fastening lugs to the pipe that is going to be used as the coping on top of the ramps, a hole could be made on the backside of the pipe for every place there is going to be a bolt. The holes should be large enough to fit a nut and the head of a socket wrench. If a groove is milled in the board where the pipe is to be mounted, the pipe can't move when it is fixed with the bolts. The sheet material on the surface of the ramp frames, the flat surface on the top and the ramp transition (not shown in the image) is also placed directly in contact with the pipe in order to keep it in place even better. The sheet material on the top also covers the hole on the backside of the pipe.

With this method, welding isn't necessary.

2007-05-16 New video on the skatepark proposal in 3D.

The movie is changed so it is a bit slower than before and it is in a higher resolution, making it more smooth.

2007-05-17 Some Nice stills from the 3d movie.

Here are some nice images from the movie above. Nothing is final about how the skatepark is going to be built yet but this is the only proposal I've got for now.

2007-03-06 Complete miniramp drawings

I have made a complete set of drawings that can be used to build the miniramp. It can be seen in full here in PDF format. Texts are in Swedish but should be fairly easy to understand. I will make a translated drawing set when I get time. So now it is only to buy material, saw boards and sheets and nail and screw together. Date to start building is closing up fast.

2007-03-13 Complete drawings for the funbox

Complete building plans for the funbox is now also finished. Texts are in Swedish only as of yet but I plan to translate these when there is some time for it. The drawings are available in PDF format here.

Added 2007-07-08; The drawings for the funbox is changed. There has been wishes for a higher and shorter box. New plans will be available shortly.

2007-03-14 Material is ordered

Material for the miniramp (including the two banks) and the funbox is now ordered. I call this stage 1 of the skatepark. Delivery is on the 20:th and then we can start to build!

I know that there are many who has longed for this moment and it may seem that it has passed a long time between the decision that the park was going to be built until we actually can start building. Some of the time has been spent to find out how much material is going to be needed and that can't be done until we know how and what we are going to build. Some more time has been spent on research on what kind of materials that is going to be used and how much this will cost. Upon this, there is also the delivery time... I can say that almost all my spare time (which isn't very much these days) this last month has been spent on this project (not that I complain, I think this is great fun). But now it feels like we very soon can be starting to do some actual building and then it is mostly up to ourselves how long it is going to take.

Now that we know how much stage 1 is going to cost, we can also a little better estimate how we can build the rest of the park within our budget.

2007-06-23 The building of the skatepark is now started.

We have now started to build. It is going pretty well and the drawings are excellent to work from. Especially since every board has a defined measure that it is just to saw after. Here are some pictures taken after two evening's and one afternoon's work.

2007-06-24 Buildday 4

This is how far we have come after two evenings and one weekend (if we now can count the day after the Midsummer's eve - when we didn't start until after 15 o'clock):

I can say that there are a lot of people that feel like a ride now.

2007-06-28 The miniramp is rideable

The miniramp is done so far that it is possible to ride in it. It is not all finished, the two sheets above the bend isn't mounted and we have not yet got the pipes for the coping. The banks on the side are not done yet either. I think we will start to build one of the two banks and then we will see if we are going to make the other one also. Then it is time for the box.
